Will Florida State continue their momentum from their win over their hated rival? Or, will Wake continue to astound?
If you asked 10 college football experts before the season to pick who would have the better record coming into their Week 7 game, it would be unanimous in the Seminoles’ favor. Records don’t tell the whole story, and in this case, the ACC Atlantic standings are a lie worthy of our current election cycle in terms of describing the talent and potential of these two teams. The Demon Deacons getting more than three touchdowns from the sportsbooks is your first clue.
The truth is Wake Forest hasn’t played a team that anyone would call “good,” let alone beat one. If you had to pick a highlight it would either be a five-point win at Indiana or a dominant win last week against Syracuse. The Hoosiers racked up 611 yards of total offense, but their six-turnover deficit cost them the game. Syracuse had proven themselves as at least a team that could score, but the Wake defense held them to less than half their previous scoring low in the 28-9 drubbing. Two of the Orange’s points came from a first quarter safety. Wake’s Cameron Glenn ran back a fumble for an 83-yard touchdown.
Florida State meanwhile has played the toughest schedule in the country. The Seminoles two losses came against the unanimous Heisman to this point, Lamar Jackson, and on a last second field goal to North Carolina. Louisville was No. 3 before their loss at the current No. 3, Clemson. Carolina bounded into the Top 25 after the win over Florida State and back out after a big loss to Virginia Tech. FSU is coming off a one-point win over then No. 10 Miami.
No. 14 Florida State will be by far the best offense and team Wake has seen. Despite the significantly tougher schedule, the Seminoles are a top 30 offense with an NFL running back in Dalvin Cook. The Demon Deacons’ 18th ranked scoring defense is almost sure to fall in the FBS hierarchy after Saturday afternoon.
